Orchiectomy

Bilateral Orchiectomy

Overview

As an intermediate or final step, Dr. Christine McGinn, D.O. performs a Bilateral Orchiectomy for transgender patients seeking gender confirmation surgery. Dr. McGinn does not perform orchiectomies on patients who have not been diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder. An orchiectomy will remove the testicles and there-by prevent production of testosterone while removing the ability to reproduce permanently.

This surgery is recommended for patients who have employment or relationship situations that prohibit gender confirmation surgery (GCS) vaginoplasty for 2-3 years. Likewise, patients with health problems that prohibit them from contra-hormone therapy (CHT) or GCS vaginoplasty may want to consider an orchiectomy. A notarized letter for birth certificate change of gender will be issued upon completion of orchiectomy. The surgery is performed in the hospital setting only and is not offered as an office procedure due to the risks involved. Orchiectomy is an outpatient procedure; however you will not be permitted to drive or be alone for 24 hours following surgery. Generally patients may return to light duty work three days following the procedure. Estrogen therapy is required following orchiectomy in order to prevent osteoporosis.

The cost for this procedure is $3,500 USD (Approx. 2,800 EUR*), $1,000 of which is due when a surgery date is scheduled. There is a choice of two hospitals: DSI of Bucks County in Bensalem, and Doylestown Hospital, both located just north of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Orchiectomy is an out-patient procedure.
