Myofascial Release is a very effective hands-on technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. The theory of Myofascial Release requires an understanding of the fascial system (or connective tissue). The fascia is a specialized system of the body that has an appearance similar to a spider's web or a sweater.

Fascia is a very densely woven system, covering and interpenetrating every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein as well as all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The fascia in our bodies is actually one structure that exists from head to foot without interruption.

Fascia and Transgender Surgery

In the normal healthy state, the fascia is relaxed and wavy in configuration. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. Through major surgery like Gender Confirmation Surgery the body experiences physical trauma, scarring, and inflammation. The fascia loses its pliability and becomes tight, restricted and a source of tension to the rest of the body. During surgery the layers of fascia are pierced and thus lose their natural wavy configuration. Because of this effect the fascia can exert excessive pressure producing pain or restriction of motion. It affects our flexibility and stability, and is a determining factor in our ability to withstand future stress and strain.

Myofascial Release provides a technique referred to as Scar Release. Through transgender surgery, and even the challenges in our pasts, we build scars in our bodies that disrupt our fascia. They exist emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Using a non-force therapy, these scars are released from the system, speeding healing time and allowing the individual to fully connect with their new body and their true self. What we're seeing is that Myofascial Release has reduced healing time for major transgender surgery from six to four weeks.

As part of the Vaginoplasty, Subcutaneous Mastectomy (FtM Top), and Phalloplasty surgeries, two sessions of Myofascial Release are included. Referrals are also available to local practitioners after patients return home. Caran will personally call the therapist and make sure that the individual understands transgender care.

Myofascial Release is a highly recommended therapy for patients of Papillon Center. Through advanced fascia freeing techniques patients will find themselves in better health, better mind, and better spirits. Myofascial Release is about freedom from emotional and physical restrictions created by trauma, stress, and inflammation, and is not about trying and forcing... But about unwinding, and letting go.
